Fenisong, Ruth - Deadlock (1952)

E-mail Print PDF
Glen Williams appears to be a kindly philanthropist; when he is discovered shot to death one evening it's hard for NYPD Lieutenant Gridley Nelson to find a possible motive. But as Williams's real character begins to emerge, so do the suspects. Two more deaths follow before Nelson clears up the case.

My first Fenisong and a pleasant introduction to a fairly prolific writer. Clearly a woman's book, with a good deal more emphasis on marital relations and the course of true love than on the realities of investigation -- the sleuth has a degree from Princeton! -- but the book is quite readable and even exerts a mild kind of fascination as the grim facts about the dead man's real nature begin to emerge. Some of the witnesses 'forget' important events too easily, and the ending is rather too convenient for everyone concerned, but for those prepared to suspend disbelief in the workings of Providence, Fenisong provides some respectable entertainment.
