Brown, Fredric - The Dead Ringer (1948)

E-mail Print PDF

In 'The Dead Ringer' Ed Hunter and his uncle Am(brose) are working at a carnival, running a sideshow. During a stretch in Evansville, Indiana, a strange midget appears in the main tent, stabbed to death. The carnival's own midget is terrified. The police have trouble finding leads. Ambrose calls on some of his carnival business contacts to try and trace the midget's origins. Ed gets involved with a couple of girls from the carnival, and another murder occurs. A dead chimpanzee apparently comes back to haunt them. There is little glamour in this carnival life -- just rain, and heavy drinking, and constant travel. By the end, with the murderers uncovered, Ed and Am are ready to move back to Chicago and join Am's old detective agency, working for Ben Starlock.
