Ed Hunter's first case as a PI occurs in 'The Bloody Moonlight'. This is probably the weakest book of the series so far, but still worth reading. Here Brown first reveals his interest in occult phenomena; like John Dickson Carr he enjoys teasing the reader with these before coming out with a more prosaic explanation. Ed is sent out to Tremont, in small-town Illinois, to investigate a scientist who claims to be receiving radio signals from Mars. Walking out to the scientist's property from the town he hears a growl and finds a corpse savagely mutilated -- apparently by some kind of animal. Then the corpse disappears. Somebody mentions werewolves, and the town begins to panic. Ed has a run-in with the sheriff, and nearly gets himself killed: the scientist becomes another victim. But with the aid of the town's newspaper publisher, Ed is able to help straighten things out. Ambrose appears only briefly in this one; it's Ed's first solo flight.
