Lockridge, Frances and Richard - Murder Out of Turn (1941)

E-mail Print PDF

The second murder mystery featuring Pam and Jerry North and a historic cross-over which introduces both Dorian Hunt -- who later marries policeman Bill Weigand -- and Lieutenant Merton Heimrich.

Pam and Jerry have invited Weigand to weekend with them in their cabin in upstate New York. The cabin is part of a small holiday community, and before long two young women in the group are murdered -- one by fire and one with a blade. The question becomes: how do they connect? Was Helen Wilson killed to cover up the murder of Jean Corbin, or vice versa? And what did she know?

Weigand and Heimrich work together on this one; Weigand takes the Manhattan end and Heimrich the local background. There are plenty of red herrings but the clues are fairly placed, and for once it's not Pam North who is placed in peril at the end; in fact the Norths have little to do other than follow the detectives around. Newcomers to the Lockridge books may find it a little wordy, and the characterisation is unusually flat, but fans will be glad of the chance to touch base with so many of these appealing characters. And they can ask themselves this question: was Heimrich intended to be a series character from the start?
