Bellairs, George - Fatal Alibi (1968)

E-mail Print PDF

The mixture as before. Littlejohn is now a Chief Superintendent at Scotland Yard, and the erstwhile Sergeant Cromwell a Chief Inspector, but that doesn't stop them putting in their own legwork on murder cases. A philandering travelling salesman is murdered on the Isle of Man and the chief suspect makes a personal appeal to Littlejohn. The Chief Super returns to his beloved island to unearth the antecedents of JJ Ringmole, deceased. Bit by bit, with Cromwell's help on the mainland, the details are uncovered. Hotels, restaurants, boarding houses, petty theft, unhappy marriages; all the minutiae of everyday life in Britain during the Sixties. Not a knuckle-whitener, but solidly done. Bellairs may be the closest thing we have to an English Simenon, accumulating his results bit by bit as the police painstakingly trawl through past and present.
